Dalam kejadian yang berlaku pada 9 Januari 2021, seorang lelaki bersenjata telah menembak Encik Prasit Thawornsri, bekas ketua kampung berusia 73 tahun, ketika beliau sedang bersenam di Kampung 8, Mukim Lahan, Daerah Yi-ngo, Wilayah Narathiwat. Mangsa telah cedera akibat ditembak dengan pistol 9mm pada bahagian lengan dan pinggul. Dua suspek menaiki motosikal tanpa nombor pendaftaran telah melarikan diri selepas kejadian.<\/p>\n

Pihak keselamatan telah segera menjalankan siasatan di tempat kejadian, mengumpul bukti dan berjaya menangkap 3 suspek. Siasatan mendapati mereka telah merancang kejadian secara berkumpulan, dengan persediaan rapi sebelum kejadian. Ketiga-tiga mereka telah dibawa ke muka pengadilan mengikut proses undang-undang.<\/p>\n

Pada 11 April 2025, Mahkamah Rayuan Wilayah 9 telah meminda keputusan Mahkamah Rendah. Hukuman kepada tertuduh pertama, Encik Anas (nama keluarga dirahsiakan), daripada penjara seumur hidup ditukar kepada penjara 33 tahun 20 bulan, setelah mempertimbangkan kerjasamanya dalam prosiding mahkamah.<\/p>\n

Tertuduh kedua, Encik Hamdam, dan tertuduh ketiga, Encik Muhammad Sabri (kedua-dua nama keluarga dirahsiakan), yang sebelum ini dijatuhkan hukuman mati, turut ditukar kepada hukuman penjara seumur hidup. Ketiga-tiga mereka disabitkan atas kesalahan keganasan, penglibatan dalam kumpulan jenayah terancang, cubaan membunuh dengan perancangan awal, serta kesalahan di bawah Akta Senjata Api dan Bahan Letupan.<\/p>\n

On January 9, 2021, a shooting incident occurred in which Mr. Prasit Thawornsri, a 73-year-old former village headman, was shot while exercising in Village No. 8, Lahan Subdistrict, Yi-ngo District, Narathiwat Province. He sustained injuries after being shot with a 9mm handgun in the arm and hip. Two assailants used an unregistered motorcycle to commit the crime and fled the scene.<\/p>\n

Security officials investigated the area, collected evidence, and conducted a thorough investigation, which led to the arrest of three suspects. Evidence revealed a coordinated plot involving planned and organized actions. The suspects were brought to face legal proceedings accordingly.<\/p>\n

On April 11, 2025, the Court of Appeals Region 9 revised the lower court\u2019s ruling. The initial sentences were: life imprisonment for Mr. Anas (surname withheld), the first defendant; and the death penalty for Mr. Hamdam and Mr. Muhammad Sabri (surnames withheld), the second and third defendants. The appeals court changed the sentences to life imprisonment for all three defendants.<\/p>\n

They were found guilty of terrorism, involvement in a secret society and criminal association, attempted murder with premeditation, and violations of the Firearms and Explosives Act. The court believed the prosecution’s case and the evidence presented.<\/p>\n

Due to the first defendant\u2019s cooperation during trial, his sentence was reduced by one-third, resulting in a final sentence of 33 years and 20 months. The second and third defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment. All three defendants remain in custody pending further appeal.<\/p>\n
